Review of Superdeep (2020): A Claustrophobic, Gory Descent into Cosmic Horror

Directed by: Arseny Syuhin
Starring: Milena Radulovic, Sergey Ivanyuk, Nikolay Kovbas, Vadim Demchog
Genre: Sci-Fi Horror / Body Horror / Cosmic Terror

Superdeep (2020) is a Russian horror film that plunges viewers into the nightmarish depths of the Kola Superdeep Borehole, the deepest man-made hole on Earth. Mixing sci-fi paranoia, grotesque body horror, and Lovecraftian dread, this film is a messy but fascinating addition to the underground horror genre.

Plot: The Horror Beneath Our Feet

In 1984, a team of Soviet scientists and soldiers investigates a mysterious outbreak at an underground research facility near the Kola Superdeep Borehole (a real-life Soviet experiment that drilled over 12 kilometers into the Earth’s crust). What they find is far worse than they imagined—a mutating fungal organism that infects and grotesquely transforms its victims.

As the infection spreads, virologist Anya (Milena Radulovic) must uncover the truth before the horror reaches the surface.

Why It Works: A Unique, Unsettling Premise

✔ Genuinely Creepy Setting – The claustrophobic tunnels and Soviet-era tech create a tense, oppressive atmosphere.
✔ Disturbing Body Horror – The infection leads to some of the most grotesque transformations since The Thing (1982).
✔ Cosmic Horror Vibes – The deeper they go, the more Lovecraftian the terror becomes.
✔ Strong Lead Performance – Radulovic sells the desperation and horror well.

Weaknesses: A Few Missteps

✖ Uneven Pacing – The first half is slow, while the finale feels rushed.
✖ Underdeveloped Characters – Some deaths lack impact because we don’t care about the victims.
✖ Confusing Sci-Fi Elements – The film sometimes over-explains the horror, killing the mystery.

Final Verdict: A Flawed But Memorable Descent into Madness

Superdeep isn’t perfect, but it’s one of the more original horror films of 2020. If you love body horror, Soviet-era sci-fi, or underground terror, it’s worth a watch—just don’t expect The Descent levels of polish.

Rating: 6.5/10

✔ For Fans Of: The ThingAnnihilationThe Tunnel (2011), cosmic horror.
✖ Not For: Those who dislike gore or slow-burn tension.

Where to Watch: Streaming on Shudder, Amazon Prime, or Tubi.
Final Thought: Makes you very glad we stopped digging so deep. ⚠️🕳️
