Movie Review: The Croods 3 (2025)

Introduction

DreamWorks Animation’s The Croods franchise has been a surprising success, blending prehistoric family hijinks with heartfelt storytelling. The first film (2013) introduced us to the lovable caveman clan, while The Croods: A New Age (2020) expanded their world with vibrant new characters and even more absurd humor. Now, The Croods 3 (2025) arrives, promising another wild adventure—this time with higher stakes, bigger laughs, and even more bizarre creatures.

Directed by Joel Crawford (The Croods: A New AgePuss in Boots: The Last Wish) and featuring the returning voice cast of Nicolas Cage, Emma Stone, and Ryan Reynolds, does this third installment keep the franchise fresh, or has the Stone Age comedy worn out its welcome?

Plot Summary (Spoiler-Free)

The Croods 3 picks up where A New Age left off. The Croods and the Bettermans have settled into an uneasy but functional coexistence, with Guy (Ryan Reynolds) and Eep (Emma Stone) now officially a couple. However, their peaceful(ish) life is disrupted when a mysterious force begins causing earthquakes, volcanic eruptions, and—most terrifying of all—disappearing food.

Convinced that the world is ending (again), Grug (Nicolas Cage) rallies the family for one last epic journey to find the legendary “Land of Tomorrow”—a fabled paradise untouched by disaster. Along the way, they encounter bizarre new creatures, rival caveman tribes, and a charismatic but shady nomad named Zog (voiced by Jack Black), who may know more about the disasters than he lets on.

Strengths of the Film

1. The Voice Cast Is Still Perfect

Nicolas Cage’s Grug remains the heart of the franchise, balancing overprotective dad energy with unintentional hilarity. Emma Stone’s Eep and Ryan Reynolds’ Guy continue to have great chemistry, while newcomers Jack Black and Awkwafina (as a hyperactive sloth-beast) steal every scene they’re in.

2. Gorgeous, Inventive Animation

DreamWorks continues to push its animation style, with The Croods 3 featuring even more surreal landscapes and creatures. A sequence inside a bioluminescent cave is particularly stunning, resembling a prehistoric rave.

3. Bigger, Funnier Set Pieces

From a Mad Max-style sandstorm chase to a chaotic battle atop floating landmasses, the action is more inventive than ever. The humor also lands consistently, with Gran (Cloris Leachman’s final role) getting some of the best one-liners.

4. Surprisingly Emotional Themes

Beneath the slapstick, The Croods 3 tackles themes of change, trust, and letting go—specifically, Grug learning to accept that his daughter is growing up. A late-film moment between Grug and Eep is genuinely touching.

Weaknesses of the Film

1. A Few Too Many Characters

With the Croods, the Bettermans, and new additions like Zog, some characters (especially Thunk and Sandy) get sidelined.

2. The Villain Is a Bit Weak

Without spoiling, the main threat feels less personal than in previous films, more of a natural disaster than a true antagonist.

3. Some Recycled Jokes

A few gags (like Grug’s fear of everything new) feel repetitive if you’ve seen the first two movies.

Final Verdict

The Croods 3 doesn’t reinvent the wheel, but it delivers exactly what fans want: heart, humor, and beautifully chaotic prehistoric adventures. It’s a worthy sequel that improves on A New Age in almost every way.

Rating: 8/10
Recommendation: A must-watch for families and animation fans—best seen in theaters for the full visual spectacle.

Will There Be a Croods 4?

The ending leaves the door open for more, and with box office success likely, we wouldn’t bet against it.
