Amazon Studios’ Without Remorse (2021) promised to be the definitive origin story of John Clark, one of Tom Clancy’s most iconic characters. Directed by Stefano Sollima (Sicario: Day of the Soldado) and starring Michael B. Jordan in the lead role, the film had all the ingredients for a hard-hitting, politically charged thriller. Instead, it delivers a serviceable but forgettable action flick that leans too heavily on genre clichés and wastes its potential.

The Premise: A Navy SEAL’s Brutal Path to Vengeance

John Kelly (Michael B. Jordan), an elite Navy SEAL, is pulled into a shadowy conspiracy when his team is ambushed and his pregnant wife (Lauren London) is murdered. Framed for the killings and left for dead, Kelly goes rogue—teaming up with a fellow operative (Jodie Turner-Smith) and a skeptical CIA officer (Jamie Bell) to uncover a US-Russia covert war that threatens to ignite World War III.

What Works: Jordan’s Star Power & Some Solid Action

1. Michael B. Jordan Commands the Screen

Jordan brings physical intensity and emotional weight to John Clark, even when the script lets him down. His fight scenes—especially a prison brawl and a subzero exfiltration sequence—are brutal and well-choreographed.

2. A Few Standout Set Pieces

• The opening Syria raid is tense and immersive.

• A parachute-free HALO jump into freezing water is visually striking.

• The final assault on a Russian safehouse delivers satisfying payback.

3. A Promising (But Wasted) Setup

The film flirts with real-world geopolitics (private militaries, false-flag ops) but never digs deep enough.

What Doesn’t: Formulaic Storytelling & Wasted Potential

1. A Predictable, Straight-to-Streaming Plot

The revenge arc feels recycled from a dozen better films (Man on Fire, John Wick). The “government betrayal” twist is telegraphed early, and the villain (Brett Gelman) is forgettable.

2. Weak Character Development

• Jodie Turner-Smith’s Lt. Commander Karen Greer is underused.

• Jamie Bell’s Robert Ritter lacks the complexity of the book version.

• John Clark’s infamous ruthlessness is softened for mainstream appeal.

3. A Cliffhanger That May Never Pay Off

The film sets up a sequel (Rainbow Six), but given its lukewarm reception, it’s unlikely we’ll see it.
